Eeklo [Belgium]

Back in 2001 Ecopower - a Belgian renewable energy cooperative with nearly 50.000 members - won a public tender to erect its first wind turbines on a piece of land that was owned by the local municipality. The tender required direct participation by local citizens and thus kept money in the local economy. That money is now being invested renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
